Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Willis) is a man with problems. But what
man doesn't have a ton of emotional baggage?? A highly recognized child psychologist, he has a wife (Williams),
who he loves, and many a commendation for his good works. Things look peachy keen. His life, however, is altered
forever when a former patient of his, Vincent (Wahlberg - who is unrecognizable in this bit), breaks into their
house, flouts Crowe for failing him, and then, just to make a better point, shoots the fine doctor on the spot.
A year passes, and the emotionally scarred Crowe receives a
new patient, the young boy Cole (Osment), who exhibits some of the same disorders that Vincent did. Unable to think
of himself a failure for the second time, he attempts to assist the obviously tormented boy with his deeply hidden
"secret."
I liked this movie. I know many a critic has panned at and dissected
it, but I won't carry on about that here. I thought Willis was wonderfully understated, and, as the plot eventually
realizes itself, you'll see he actually had no choice. The star of the show, however, is Osment. He delivers his
lines with great sincerity, weeps with super conviction, and plays this part to the hilt.
I recommend you see this in the theater. Not since Primal Fear
have I audibly gasped at a finely designed plot twist. You need to hear the audience gasp with you. Well worth
the price of admission.
