You Can't Hurry Love |

| Syd's patient
[whose name I wish I could remember! Mrs. Langford?]: A patient is brought in to the clinic. She's obviously a drunk, and looks indigent. She looks Syd in the eye and says, "How could you do that to your mother?", then becomes unconscious. Syd shrugs, but it does strike a chord with her. At the hospital, she discusses lab results with another doctor. Apparently, the woman is diabetic - and therefore drinking is a huge threat to her life. She checks on the woman, who has no ID on her except a wedding invitation. Syd reads it, and recognizes the bride's name as a classmate of hers from high school. Looking at the woman again, she recognizes the patient as the bride's mother. When the woman is alert, Syd addresses her by name. The woman wonders how Syd knows her, and Syd tells her that her parents used to play bridge with the patient and her husband, and that her daughter Megan was a classmate of hers. She mentions the wedding, but the hostile woman says she will not be attending. She adds that she has nothing to wear, anyway. Syd tries to convince her to stop drinking, because of her diabetes, but the woman will not. The woman adds that she was sorry to hear of Syd's mother's death... but says Linda never liked her, and she never liked Linda either. Syd is puzzled about why this woman dislikes her mother. Falling asleep at the table later, her mother appears to her as she dreams. She asks her mom about it, and her mother tells her she should know: she was watching from the stairs. We see as Syd recalls sneaking down the stairs during the bridge game, and overhears her mother telling the woman that she is drunk and shouldn't even be out in public. The woman angrily leaves, and Jim is embarrassed. Later, Syd takes a nice dress to the run-down apartment in which this woman lives. She's passed out at the table. Syd throws out her drink, and the woman stirs. The woman icily asks why she's there. Syd gives her the medication she's prescribing for her, and leaves the dress, saying now she has no excuse not to attend Megan's wedding. Later, the woman visits Syd at the clinic. She returns the dress to her, saying she won't attend the wedding. She wants to know why Syd is doing all this. Syd tells her that she and her own mother had grown so far apart, and now that she is gone there is not a day that goes by during which she doesn't regret that they weren't closer. She tells the woman she can drink herself to death, but she should not ruin Mega's wedding. The woman says she can't just change her life, but Syd tells her to take it one day at a time - starting today. Doug: Doug is still working at the Barkery, and consuming doggie treats while apparently sleeping in a doggie bed. Robbie is suspicious of him. He also says he left his wallet behind. Joannie inquires, and Doug indeed has it, and returns it. However, the money is $40 short. Next, Doug shows up with a nice-appearing dog, whom he says he found on a street corner, and he insists the dog is a stray. Joannie is a little surprised, since the dog appears so well cared-for, but she believes him and sends him to her dad to have the dog checked out. The dog is in excellent health, Jim tells him. Doug appears to know a lot about dogs, himself. Later, when Jim is done checking out the dog, Heather offers to take him back to the Barkery, but Jim first wants to make sure there's no ID. There are no tags, but he checks to see if there's an ID microchip imbedded in his shoulder, which is a new way pet owners are identifying their animals. He scans, and indeed there is. Heather calls the owner. The owner never returns the call, and they wonder if he's away, but they call Animal Control as a next step in locating the owner. Animal Control comes by, and they want to discuss the man who brought the dog in. He dog was not found on the street corner, but inside an Animal Control car, which was broken into and the dog released. In fact, this has happened many times lately, and witnesses describe Doug. Jim tells Joannie about the officer's visit, and tells her he didn't tell them that Doug worked at the Barkery, but warns her about what has been happening. When the officer later tracks Joannie down at the Barkery, she says he no longer works there. She finds him, hands him his severance pay and tells him he's on a leave of absence. He tells her he had a sad childhood and his dog was his confidante; school, jobs and relationships didn't go well. He also says he's moved 14 times, and it's time for him to be going on again. Joannie tearfully tells him goodbye, and he sweetly kisses her forehead. Robbie: Heather is still angry with him for claiming to be gay for so long, just to avoid going out with her. Jim tells him she'll get over it, when she gets a new boyfriend. Robbie decides to set her up with a new guy at work (who's, coincidentally, a bit of a klutz). He tells the fellow that Heather's just great, but he'll need a dog. The guy has one, and sets off to Dr. Hansen's vet clinic with the pet. He and Heather seem to click. Later, the guy thanks Robbie for introducing him to Heather. He tells Robbie Heather is amazing. Robbie says she's nice, but he's not so sure she's amazing. The guy says indeed she is - he says Robbie hadn't told him that Heather had been an Olympic gymnast, and he should have seen the backflip she did off her bed. He also thinks it's wonderful that Heather gives a portion of her trust fund to the homeless. Robbie is stunned: she has a trust fund? Joannie later finds Robbie pouting over a beer at the bar. She wants to know who's the girl who's got him crying in his beer. He tells her she won't believe who it is. He asks her why she's there, and she replies that she was hoping he'd buy her a beer: Doug has left, for good. Robbie knows she liked Doug, and she agrees, saying he was special. She tries to give Robbie the $40 that was missing from his wallet, saying Doug was returning it, but he says he had been mistaken and had spent it on a girl. He smiles at her. [Previews for next week show Syd and Kyle dealing with his cancer, which appears to be getting worse - they show him collapsing, and her at his bedside.] Kyle: Kyle asks Syd to meet him in what appears to be a bookstore (or else a camping store with a book section). He's looking through travel books, and has a proposition for her: he'd like them to go away together, and he's chosen a book on the Grand Canyon. He's bought a tent and the works. Syd says she'll consider the idea. She gets back to him later, and tells him that her hesitancy is because they have not been physically intimate yet, and camping in the canyon is not the setting she'd pictured for such a momentous occasion. He sees her point, and plans for them to go to a romantic inn the next night. At the inn, Syd produces an aromatherapy heated oil/massage set Joannie has given her for the occasion. As she disrobes, she trips and stubs her toe; then she burns Kyle with the oil. The big romantic evening doesn't happen, and both are disappointed. Syd approaches him in the back yard, as he's checking out the tent. They both apologize for the previous night's awkwardness. He confesses that the trip was more about his fear of dying than about their relationship, and they agree that it will happen when they're ready... or else it just won't happen. He kisses her, and she suggests they move to the tent. Apparently, they are ready. : ) |
